Romaine, Amanda (17 July 1857 - 20 Sept. 1937)

Mr. and Mrs. Gus Krause went to Chicago to attend the funeral of Mrs. Krause’s sister, Mrs. Amanda Romaine, held there Sept. 22, under the auspices of Eastern Star.

Amanda Elizabeth Shupe, the daughter of Elias Shupe, was born in Fond du Lac County, Wis., July 17, 1857, and died Sept. 20, 1937, aged 80 years, 2 months and 3 days.

She came with her parents to Clark County in 1871, the family settling on a farm just north of Loyal. Here she grew to womanhood and became a teacher in the rural schools.

March 1, 1880, she was united in marriage with George E. Fessenden, and for three years lived in Kansas. In 1883 they came back traveling by covered wagon and settled on land south of Thorp.

In 1899 deceased moved to Chicago, where in 1900 she married to Benjamin T. Romaine. Chicago remained her home until her death. Mr. Romaine died in 1916.

Mrs. Romaine is survived by a son, Royal V. Fessendon and a daughter, Mrs. Eva L. McAush, both of Chicago; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Romaine was a woman of fine qualities of mind and heart. The writer had the pleasure of knowing her in the pioneer days at Thorp and remembers her as a lady of refinement and culture.
