C. H. SHELDON

Mr. Sheldon is the owner and manager of a drug store in Thorp, Withee Township, Clark County, Wisconsin. He was born in St. Lawrence County, New York, in 1847. He came from New York to Waupaca, Wisconsin, in 1864, where he enlisted and served one year in the war, after which he engaged in lumbering fore several years. He came to Clark County in 1882, and built the large sawmill at Thorp and ran it one year, after which he went into the drug business, in which he has been for the past four years. He is a member of the county commission for soldiers' relief, which committee is appointed by the county judge. While in the army he was a member of Co. A. of the 8th Wisconsin infantry.

The new county officers take possession on Monday next. This village loses one of its oldest citizens in the personage of C.H. Sheldon who takes over the sheriff's office. Mr. Sheldon removes with his family and household goods to Neillsville this week. His appointments so far as decided upon are Geo. A. Ludington of Neillsville, undersheriff, and H. Leible of this place and E. Wicker of Colby as deputies.

The Charles Henry Sheldon Family

Charles Henry Sheldon was born 1 June 1847 at Lisbon, St Lawrence Co., NY. They moved to Royalton, Waupaca Co., WI in 1864 where he worked in the lumbering industry and lived there until 1882.

In 1882 he moved to Clark Co., WI and built a large sawmill which he ran for a year.He afterwards went in to the drug business. He was a member of the county commission for soldier’s relief.

Charles fought in the Civil War serving as a private in Co A 8th WI. Inf. From 3 Sept 1864 till 15 Aug 1865.

Charles married Mary Helen Fletcher b 25 Oct 1848 St Lawrence Co, NY.; daughter of David & Mary Fletcher on 20 Oct 1866.

Lani note/Feb 2006 The Fletchers had come west in1865 and that is probably how Charles & Mary probably met.

After the Civil War Charles came back to Waupaca Co., WI; and engaged in lumbering for several years. In 1882 he came to Clark Co., WI. He and Albert Nye built the first sawmill at Thorp, WI; which Charles ran for one year and then he sold it to Nye, Lusk & Hudson.

Charles next owned a drug store and hardware business for the next four years in Thorp, WI. He must have liked to race horses as the following excerpt states"

Thorp Courier September 25, 1885

Letter to the Editor - In the county farmer's trotting race for a purse of $60, D. Varnum's mare "Crippled Jim" 2nd and "William S" owned by C.H. Sheldon of Thorp, 3rd. (Neillsville Times) The above is a malicious libel. "William S" took second money. And the undersigned agree to match "Wm S" against any of the horses that took part in the above named race, for a purse of from $100 to $500 a side. One week's notice of the time and place of the race, to be given. (Signed) C.H. Sheldon, H.F. Sargent

On 3 Jan 1895 became the sheriff as the following Thorp Courier states:

Leible of this place and E. Wicker of Colby as deputies His obituary also states he was the postmaster at Thorp, WI.

Their only daughter, Eva, was married Charles Adams at the home of Charles & Mary in 1901 by Rev J.B. Bachman, On 10 Nov 1910 Mary Jane (Fletcher) Sheldon died at her home in Aurora, Taylor Co., WI. She died of cancer at age 62 years and 15 days.

Her public works included the Rebekah Lodge and the W.R.C.

Her body was brought to her former home in Thorp, WI; where the funeral services were held with Rev J.B .Bachman officiating. She was buried at the Thorp Village Cemetery. Left to mourn her were her husband, Charles; her daughter, Eva; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Witham of Appleton, WI; Mrs. B.P. Hopkins of New London, WI.; and Mrs. C.J. Mix of Royalton, WI. and two brothers, Ira and Charles of Royalton, WI. After his wife’s death he moved to Gilman, Clark Co, WI as his obit said the following:

In 1911 he again moved to Gilman to a farm about five miles west of that town where he lived out his life.

Charles died 30 Dec 1927 at his home in Gilman, WI. He was a charter member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Thorp, WI.

After a short service at his home the following day his body was brought to Thorp, WI, to the Odd Fellow Hall where Wendel Bennett conducted the service. The pallbearers were E Strasman, Peter Kronberg, Walter Larson, Walter Fults, Mike Kronberg and J.E. Lund.

He was survived by his daughter, Mrs. Charles (Eva) Adams and nine grandchildren. He is buried at the Thorp Village Cemetery.

This Regiment, known as the "Eagle Regiment" was organized 4 September 1861, with a numerical strength of 973. It was mustered in Sept. 13 and left the state Oct. 12 for the lower Mississippi.

It took part in the actions at Greenville, Island No. 10, Farmington, Corinth, Iuka, Henderson's Hill, Pleasant Hill, Cloutierville, Bayou Lamourie Atchafalaya River, Lake Chicot, Jackson, Haynes' Bluff, Vicksburg Richmond, La., and Nashville.

 

The General commanding at Farmington, in general orders, said, "The Badger State may feel proud to have the honor of being represented by so gallant a regiment as the 8th Wisconsin."

General Sherman highly complimented the Regiment for doing "its whole duty in the camp, on the march and in battle," for "Peculiar courage and gallantry at Jackson and throughout the siege of Vicksburg," and for other services.

 

The original strength of 973 was augmented to a total enrollment of 1,643. Losses by death 255, missing 3, desertion 60, transfer 41, discharge 320. It was mustered out at Demopolis, Alabama on 5 September 1865 with 964 men.
