Luedke, Bertha August (23 Jan. 1885 - 21 Oct. 1936)

Mrs. Herman Luedke, nee Bertha August Schiffelbein, was born January 23, 1885 in Germany where she grew to womanhood. On March 11, 1880 she was married to Mr. Luedke and a short time after the couple left Germany and settled at Jefferson County, Wisconsin where Mr. Luedke found work on the railroad. On November 1, 1901 the family came to Clark County, settling on a farm in Pine Valley.

Their union was blessed with eight children, six children, preceding the mother in death. Mr. and Mrs. Luedke shared life’s months. Mr. Luedke died February 11, 1917. Mrs. Luedke moved to Neillsville in the fall of 1920 and made her home with her daughter Helen. On June 30 of this year Mrs. Luedke fell down stairs and broke her hip. She was taken to the hospital where she died Wednesday morning at the age of 81 years old.

Mrs. Luedke is survived by a son, Ernest of Merrillan, a daughter, Helen, Mrs. Zinill and a brother, Herman of Janesville and two grandchildren.

The funeral was held Friday from St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rev. William Baumann officiating. Burial was in the Neillsville Cemetery.
