Tompkins, James Edward (15 July 1850 - 29 Feb. 1936)

James Edward Tompkins passed away at the Neillsville hospital at the age of eighty-five years, 7 months, and 14 days on Saturday, Feb. 29, after a two weeks illness.

James Edward Tompkins was born in Essex, New York, July 15, 1850. He was the son of Martha E. (Lindsey) and Jones Tompkins. He came with his parents at the age of 12 to Neillsville in 1862, locating on a farm six miles south of Greenwood, in the Town of Eaton.

He was united in marriage to Frank Ann Raymond in 1875. They settled on the farm now operated by their son Earl. To this union were born two sons Earl Delos and Jones. He helped his father Jones Tompkins operate the old home farm until the time of his marriage.

He leaves to mourn his death Earl and his wife and his son Jones, two grandchildren, Lorraine Iris and Nyle Everette Tompkins. There are two sisters-in-law; Mrs. Herbert Fradette and Mrs. Ross Paulson, both of Neillsville, Wis. His wife preceded him in death several years ago.

The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Greenwood Tuesday, March 3, at 2 o’clock and interred in the Greenwood Cemetery, with the Reverend Gaylord officiating.
