Weichert, August (7 SEP 1848 - 24 APR 1910)

August Weichert died at his home in the East ward, this city, on Sunday evening, April 24th, 1910, of dropsy, caused by chronic heart and liver troubles, aged 61 years, 7 months and 17 days.

Deceased was born in Frankenburg, Germany, Sept. 7th, 1848. He came to America in June 1882, and settled at Lawrence, Mass. In Nov. 1884 he was married to Miss Lizzie Mueller, who survives to mourn his death. The same month of his marriage he moved to Chicago, where he worked at his trade, that of cigar maker, until he came to Colby in August 1899, to live on a farm east of this city. After a few weeks he decided that farming was not to his liking and sold his land and moved to this city, opening up a cigar factory which he continued to operate, with the assistance of his wife, up to the time of his death.

August Weichert was a soldier in the German Army, and was a member of the Deutscher-Krieger Verein of Spencer, a society formed about eight years ago, by former German soldiers, which society sent a delegation of 29, full uniform, to escort the body to the grave and fire the customary salute.

The funeral was held from St. John’s German Evangelical Church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Bizer, and was largely attended. Interment took place at Colby Cemetery.
