Purgett, Maude (17 May 1880 - 4 Jan. 1963)

Funeral service for Mrs. Eugene Purgett, Maude Murphy, were held Sunday at 2:00 o’clock from the First Congregational Church, Owen, Wis. Rev. Ralph Claybaugh, pastor of the parish officiated at the final rites with burial being made at Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Purgett, 83, passed away Friday afternoon at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley, where she had been admitted as a medical patient on New Year’s Day. Her passing came fast and free of tiring confinement and treatment as is evidenced by the fact she was up and about enjoying Christmas Day at the home of her son Ray, and family.

During the services vocal numbers, "In the Garden," and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" were sung by Mrs. Ted Klabon with Jane Westendorf being the accompanist. Harold Schopfer, Arthur Karow, Oscar Neibacker, Harry Baehr and Bert Eberts, Floral offerings were in charge of the pallbearer’s wives.

Mrs. Maude Murphy Purgett was born at Remington, Indiana, May 17, 1880. Received her education there.

On December 25, 1898, she was married to Eugene Purgett at Monticello, White County, Indiana. They farmed in Iroquois County, Illinois, and at Goodland, Indiana, and in 1917 moved to the present farm in Clark County. This home which is about six miles north of Owen, was hued out of the wilderness and it is now one of the finest homes in Clark County.

To this union five children were surviving children are; Charles Henry Purgett, Germantown, Wis, Mrs. Lucy Purgett Austin, Rochester, N. Y., and Ray Eugene Purgett, route 2, Owen, on the home farm, two died in infancy.

Her husband, Eugene Purgett, preceded her in death September 19, 1951.

She leaves to mourn her three children, a brother, Fred of Kokomo, Ind.; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Purgett was an honorary member of the Royal Neighbors of America, having been a member for 52 years.
