Leonhardt, Otto A. (3 JAN 1883 - 5 JUL 1907)

Herman Leonhard received a dispatch from Spirit Lake Saturday morning announcing the sad news of the drowning of his son Otto the evening before, by the capsizing of the boat while he and Charley Adams, also from here (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.), were out riding. Mr. Leonhardt and eldest son John went up on the afternoon train and returned on the midnight limited with the body. Charley Adams returned with them and says that Otto and himself went out after supper, Friday evening, July 5th, for a ride, and were returning when the boat, which was dipping water, capsized and Otto being a good swimmer struck out for shore about ten rods distant, but was taken with cramps, it is supposed, and sank before assistance could reach him. Charley could not swim and had gone town twice before catching the boat, which he held onto until another boatman on the lake came to his rescue.

Otto Albert Leonhardt was born at Sheboygan, Jan. 3rd, 1883, and came to Colby with his parents nearly twelve years ago, and had hosts of friends, among old and young, who deeply sympathize with the bereaved family.

The funeral was held from St. John’s Church, conducted by Rev. J. Bizer, Monday afternoon.
