McNelly, Stephen Summer (30 Sept. 1885 - 1935)

Stephen Summer McNelly, 49, principal of the Marinette High School, passed away in the M. and M. Hospital last Thursday morning shortly after 7 o’clock, where he had been a patient since Tuesday.

While enjoying a fishing trip at Sand Lake in the Thunder Mountain district on Monday in company with A. M. Wilson, Karl Evert and Stafford D. Byrum, of this city, Mr. McNelly was taken seriously ill and was brought home. On Tuesday he submitted to an operation for appendicitis and gall bladder trouble. Although he had been in poor health for the past year, suffering with a gall bladder infection, his condition was not regarded as serious and his death was unexpected and a shock to the community.

Mr. McNelly, who had been a resident of this city for the past years, was born in Richland Center, Wis., September 30, 1885, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel McNelly, now both deceased.

He was married to Caroline Taylor at Westfield, Wis., sixteen years ago, who survives.

The deceased, who had been principal of the local high school for the past five years was graduated from the Richland Center high school, Whitewater Normal and the University at Madison. He received his Master’s degree in 1933.

Survivors

Besides his widow, he is survived by four children, Theodore, Lucille, John and Jimmie, all at home; also two brothers, Farrell McNelly, Milwaukee; Monroe McNelly, Philadelphia, and six sisters, Mrs. Russell Jennings, Portland, Ore.; Miss Ruby McNelly, Milwaukee; Mrs. Jesse Stoddard, Itica, Wis.; Mrs. Herb Radke, Neillsville, Wis.; Mrs. Glen Stoeffel, Altoona, Wis.; and Mrs. J. C. Williams, Seattle, Washington.

Mr. McNelly was a member of the Marinette Kiwanis Club, of the Marinette county Sportsman’s club, of the Little River Golf Club and of the Lancaster Masonic Lodge at Lancaster, Wis. He was also a member of the board of trustees of Pioneer Presbyterian church.

The remains were removed to the McLain Funeral Home where Services were held in the chapel on Saturday morning at 9 o’clock. The Rev. Charles S. Pier, D. D., of Pioneer Presbyterian church officiated.

At the close of the services the body was taken to Madison, by motor, where interment took place. - Marinette Eagle-Star.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Radke joined other relatives at Madison for the burial services Saturday.
