Prosser, John F. (17 JAN 1833 - 2 MAR 1901)

Died, at his home in the town of Frankfort, Marathon Co., Wis., Saturday morning, March 2nd, 1901, of apoplexy, John F. Prosser, aged 68 years, 1 month and 13 days.

John F. Prosser was born in Oswego Co., N.Y., Jan. 17th, 1833; he came with his parents to Wisconsin, reaching Fond du Lac, Oct. 9th, 1855, when they located in the town of Forest. Sept. 11th, 1861, he enlisted in Co. H, 14 Reg. Wis. Vol. Inft., and at the organization of the company was elected sergeant; he was promoted to end Lieutenant, and later to 1st Lieutenant; and had command of the company for a period and was promoted to captain, but never commissioned. He re-enlisted as a veteran, and served until June 13th, 1865, when he was mustered out. While at home, on furlough, he was united in marriage with Martha Chase, Feb. 20th, 1865. There were three children born to this union, and are now living, Mrs. J.W. Crandall, Granite Falls, Minn., Mrs. G.A. Farnsworth, Minneapolis, Minn., and J.A. Prosser, Glidden, Wis.

He moved to Delaware, Iowa in 1867, and in 1873 came to Colby, and took up a homestead in what is now the town of Frankfort, but did not make a permanent residence there until some years later.

His first wife died Aug. 2nd, 1877, and on April 12th, 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Francis Oviatt, who survives him. To this union there were born four children, Walter, Annie, Myrtle and Dollie, all at home.

John Prosser was a man highly respected by all who knew him, a man of strong ideas and could only be swerved from those ideas when thoroughly convinced that he was wrong. He was scrupulously honest in all his dealings with his fellow men; had held several offices in his town to the entire satisfaction of his constituents.

He was a beloved comrade of Isaac N. Earl, Post 112, G.A.R., and had served his comrades as Commander.

The funeral was held from the M.E. Church, Tuesday forenoon, Rev. E.G. Vischer officiating, and was attended by the bereaved wife and all of his sons and daughters. Besides the wife and relatives, a brother, James F. Prosser, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. W. S. Mentor of Fond du Lac, who were also present at the funeral.
