Stephens, Silas T. (8 MAR 1831 - 3 MAY 1911)

Silas T. Stephens died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. J. Call at Portage, Wis., Wednesday evening of last week after a protracted illness of the infirmities of old age. He was born in New York State March 8, 1831, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Stephens, and came West when a young man, settling in Fond du Lac Co. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. H., 32nd Wis. Vol. Reg., and was one of the few present day survivors who had the distinction of being with Sherman on his famous march to the sea.

For over thirty years he made his home on a farm west of this village (Dorchester, Clark County, Wis.), but went to Portage two years ago with his wife and since they have been making their home with their daughter, Mrs. Call. His aged wife and a family of grown up children survive. Services were conducted over the body at the Call home at Portage Friday afternoon and the body was brought here Saturday for burial. Services were also held at the Little White Church, conducted by Rev. John Marks.
