Flaherty, Charles F. (15 AUG 1851 - 26 FEB 1935)

Charles Francis Flaherty was born at Sheboygan Falls, Wis., on August 15, 1851, and died at the Medford Clinic in Medford, Wis., on February 26, 1935, at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 11 days.

At the age of 7 years he moved with his parents to Chilton, Calumet County, Wis., where he remained on the home farm until he was 21 years old. He then found employment elsewhere making staves, coming home occasionally as he found the opportunity.

On February 7, 1881, he was married to Rhoda Welsh, daughter of William and Elizabeth Welsh.

In the same year he moved with his wife onto an eighty acre farm which he had purchased in Loyal Township; there he built a house and barn and made his home.

He worked in the woods to some extent, the remainder of his time being given to the clearing and improvement of his farm.

He and his wife reared seven children: Eugene and Vincent of Perkinstown, Wis., John (deceased) Margaret Hastings (deceased) Agnes Stoneberg, Cottage Grove, Oregon; Kathryn Beaver, Loyal, and Agnes Duell, Greenwood.

In the year of 1911 he retired from the farm life and moved in Loyal where they remained until 1927, when they moved to Perkinstown, Wis. Here he lived enjoying the pleasures of outdoor life until the time of his death. His wife survives him. He had two sisters Mrs. Mary McGrau deceased, and Mrs. Anna Kennedy now deceased, passing away on the same day of his death. He also had five brothers Stephen, James deceased, Michael, John and Joseph.

He leaves 20 grand children and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held on Saturday, March 2, at the M. E. Church, Loyal. The Pastor Rev. A. N. Chapman officiated. Walter Nichols conducted the funeral, the interment was at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Loyal. Pall bearers were Ralph Clemetson, Dan Castner, Joe Bertz, Joe Wedl, Geo. Tucker and Lee Clouse.

Those from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. Michael Flaherty, Hilbert, Wis., Mr. Clifford Flaherty, Stevens Point; Mr. Eugene Flaherty, Perkinstown; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Armstrong and son Jolly, Perkinstown.

Charles F. Flaherty was my great grandfather. My father was William Eugene Flaherty but he was orphaned and adopted by the Redman family when he was about 5 years old. He grew up in Medford, WI. His father was Eugene Flaherty, brother to Vincent and John. My father's mother was Viola Campbell who was married to Eugene. Eugene either left her or they divorced, she could not afford to keep the children (my father had two sisters) and she left them with her mother, to go in search of work, but her mother left them at an orphanage. His two sisters were adopted out to two different families and we have records showing Eugene tried in vain to get the children back from the orphanage. The children were not to be joined together again for many years. My father remembered things from his childhood (he was born in 1911) and in the mid 1940's he found his father, Eugene (friends called him Rolo). He found his sisters also. My father died in 1988 and did not share much of the story with us, however with the help of his sister's siblings we have been given more info. It was wonderful to find this obit on the web. I also found the biography of Charles F. Flaherty on the web. I wish I could find a picture of my grandmother, Viola Campbell. She died of smallpox when she was 30 years old. She was from Perkinstown and I believe she was buried in Cloquet, MN. There are some accounts that she remarried a Mr.Roy Gillespie and he died and I think she married again. WE have pictures of My grandfather Eugene, his brother Vincent and even pictures of Charles F. Flaherty, but none of my grandmother, Viola. Beth Redman Kray - kraydays@gmail.com.
