Waterpohl, Jane (1836? - JUN 1896)

Mrs. Jane Waterpohl, aged about 60 years, committed suicide by hanging sometime between Thursday night and Saturday morning of last week.

She was stopping with her daughter, Mrs. Henry Reeves, at the R.B. Salter & Co. mill boarding house. She retired about nine o’clock Thursday evening, and that was the last seen of her alive. Friday morning Mrs. Reeves went to call her and found the room empty, the bed, apparently not having been slept in. Little regard was given the matter at first, as she was in the habit of strolling about at all times, seasonable or unseasonable, but when, as the day progressed, not race of her could be found, a systematic search was instituted and kept up until dark, without avail Saturday morning M. J. Shean started in where the search was abandoned the night before, and within five rods of that place, after passing through a rather dense growth of alder bushes, he came upon the body hanging to the limb of a tree, the feet touching the ground. He notified the relatives and justice B.A. Wilms. The latter immediately impaneled a jury and proceeded to the spot. The jury, after viewing the body and hearing what evidence the justice thought necessary, returned a verdict of death by suicide.

Mrs. Waterpohl came here (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.) from Fairchild, where she has relatives living, and spent a portion of her time here with her daughters and then returned to Fairchild. She has been in the habit of going and coming as she pleased. She was erratic in her ways and has long been considered slightly deranged.

She leaves three daughters at this place, Mrs. H. A. Reeves, Mrs. Lena Kading and Miss Dena Waterpohl, to mourn her sad demise, also sons and daughters at Fairchild, where the remains were taken for interment.

The correct name for the deceased is Jeanette Watenphul.  She was my gg aunt.
