Schmitz, Daniel Lee (28 February 1950 - 26 April 1972)

Funeral services for Daniel Lee Schmitz, 22, of Neillsville, who died April 26 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield as the result of injuries sustained in a truck-train accident earlier that day were held Saturday April 29, at 1:30 p.m. from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Norman W. Lindloff officiated and burial was made in the town of Lynn Cemetery at Granton. The Georgas Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Daniel Schmitz, the son of Lamar and Thelma (Ott) Schmitz, was born February 28, 1950, in Neillsville where he attended schools and graduated from high school in 1968. He also attended the Madison Business College. Daniel Schmitz was campaign manager for mayor William Dyke of Madison and for U. S. Congressman Andre LaTendre of the Seventh Congressional District. At the time of his death, he was employed as as advertising salesman for the Black River Shopper.

A member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Neillsville Rotary Club, the Clark County Male Chorus and of the Wisconsin Republican party, Daniel Schmitz was active both in political and civic affairs.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Darla, at home; three brothers, Richard and Duane of La Crosse and Dean, at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Schmitz of Granton and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ott of Marshfield; and his great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bulgrin of Marshfield. He is also survived by his fiancée, Miss Connie Brown of Neillsville.

Pallbearers were: Andre LaTendre, Robert Lulloff, Earle Siebert, Norman Saracoff, Marvin Love and David Bertz. Edward Schoenherr sang “Asleep in Jesus” and “Be Still, My Soul.” He was accompanied by Victor Lehmann. Members of the Neillsville Volunteer Fire Department attended in a body.
