Grush, Roy (1911? - 2 Jul 1917)

"Little Roy is dead." These were the sad tidings borne to Mrs. E. W. Grush by Dr. Harper and Mrs. Daisy Maxon of Merrillan, last Monday morning, and a few minutes later the heart broken father arrived in an auto from Merrillan, bringing the remains of his six-year-old son. Mr. Grush is erecting a new house on his farm in Houghtonburg, and had gone that morning to the sandpit near the Merrillan Cemetery for a load of sand, his son accompanying him. He had loaded the sand and started from the pit, walking beside the wagon, as he had on a heavy load. Little Roy was walking and playing about the road. Mr. Grush stopped the team to rest and when he started again missed the boy, looking back he saw him lying in the wheel track, the heavy wagon having run over him. He immediately rushed the prostrate boy to the drug store in Merrillan, where it was found that life was extinct, he having been killed almost instantly.

The news of the sad accident came as a shock to the crews working about the new house and all work was suspended at once. Kind neighbors soon gathered to lend their aid and offer what condolences possible to the parents, who, even as they looked with loving eyes upon the lifeless form of their little son, could hardly realize that he had been taken from them. Mr. Grush is a careful driver and was ever watchful that no injury would come to either of his children. The little boy was a chum of his father's, and the latter feels the loss particularly keen under the circumstances which the accident happened. No blame whatever can be attributed to him for it. The mother is heartbroken as that morning, on account of being busy with her household doings, she had urged Mr. Grush to take Roy with him after the load of sand.

Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and were attended by a large number of relatives, neighbors and friends. Many beautiful flowers covered the little casket. Burial was made in the Houghtonburg Cemetery, beside a baby brother, who died several years ago.
