Aileen Elizabeth (Hughes) Wheatley

Aileen Elizabeth (Hughes) Wheatley, born in Clark Co., on Jan. 25, 1917, passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2003 in Stanwood, Wash.

She was the daughter of Nettie (Counsell, Short) and James Hughes of the Town of Grant. She was raised on their dairy farm, educated in the Kurth School, and Neillsville High School. Aileen graduated from the University of Chicago - St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing in 1938, served with the U.S. Public Health Service under the Department of the Army in WW II years, and worked as a registerd nurse for her entire career in hospitals and clinics.

In 1945, Aileen was married to James Wheatley of Cleveland, Ohio. The couple lived in that area until they retired to Dade City, Florida in 1965. Aileen continued to care for friends and neighbors and stray animals at her home. Jim preceded her in death in June, 1980, after which she stayed in the Dade City area until she joined her niece, Bonnie (Hughes) Wagner on Camano Island, Wash., in 2000. In recent months, she resided at the Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood, Wash.

No children were born to Aileen and Jim. She is survived by her nieces, Bonnie Wagner, Bettie Scheffer, of Vancouver, Brit. Columbia, Canada, Mary Larsen of Seattle, Wash., Marjorie Vine of Minocqua, and Dorothy Linster of Verona; nephews, Michael Hughes of San Jose, calif., Dale Short, Town of Grant, and Floyd Short of Neillsville.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Hughes; her half-sister, Helen (Short) Vine; her half-brother, Eugene Short, all from the Town of Grant, a nephew, Glenn Short, and a niece, Jeannette (Short) Gaier.

Aileen was a dear and caring woman, loved by many, she will be greatly missed.
