Grush, John (26 JUN 1853 - 20 May 1907)

John Grush died at his farm home in Houghtonburg at about six o'clock Monday evening, May 20, 1907, after an attack of the grippe, which brought on a general breaking down of the system. Mr. Grush had been in poor health for several months, after the last sickness had seemed to convalesce rapidly, but his old time vitality was gone and he passed peacefully away Monday evening, surrounded by his family and a few ministering friends. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at his late home, conducted by rev. B. C. Sills, and the burial was in the cemetery close by. Many friends and neighbors were present to offer the last tribute to the memory of the deceased..

Those who knew John Grush best, who had lived as neighbors through a score of years, were his best friends. He was a quiet, unassuming man, but underneath the rough exterior was inlaid a deep religious faith and the true principles of brotherly love. He was a true husband and a kind father, and has borne the sickness and cares that have overshadowed his home with patience and tenderness.

Mr. Gush was 53 years, 10 months and 24 days of age; born in Bavaria, Germany, June 26, 1853. At the age of thirteen he immigrated to Waukesha Co., Wis., where he spent a number of years and then moved to New York State. In 1877 he returned to Wisconsin, choosing Jackson Co. as his home, where he has since resided. On Jul 3, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Olson, who with the family of three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Halvorson of Stanley, Mrs. Dunn of Garden Valley,, and Mae; and one son, Earl of Humbird, is left to mourn his death.

He was the youngest of a family of eleven children, of whom one sister and one brother survive him.
