The Rev. Joseph Henseler

The Rev. Joseph N. Henseler, 75, Neillsville, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Parish, Neillsville. The Rev. Bishop Raymond Burke officiated. Music was provided by Ronald Resong, Howard Sturtz III, and St. Mary's adult choir. Burial was in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield. Pallbearers were his nephews, Robert Bella, Karl Tasse, Ronnie Varsho, Thomas Henseler, Ralph Varsho, and Michael Tasse.

Joseph N. Henseler was born Oct. 24, 1927 in Bakerville. He lived there until 1945, when his parents moved to Marshfield. He attended the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, Ohio, for 10 years prior to his ordination to the priesthood on June 7, 1952, at the same Pontifical College by the Holy Father's Papal Delegate to the United States, Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani. His first assignment was the St. Stanislaus Parish, Stevens Point, from 1952 - 53. He was then assigned to St. Mary's Parish, Wausau, and instructor at Newman Catholic High School from 1953 - 1959. The last six months in this period was an assignment at St. James, Wausau, while continuing to teach at Newman High School. His next assignment was to St. Lawrence, Wisconsin Rapids, and instructor at Assumption Catholic High School. In late 1960, he was made pastor of St. Therese Parish, Schofield - Rothschild, where he remained until 1968. He then went on to Immaculate Conception Parish, Alma Center, until 1974. In 1974, he came to St. Mary's, Neillsville, where he remained for 26 years until his retirement in 2000. He continued to live in Neillsville until the time of his death.

Survivors include three sisters, Delores Bella, Berlin, Lorraine (Sylvester) Tasse, Marshfield, and Adelaide (Norbert) vasho, Marshfield; one brother, Edward (Inez) Henseler, Coleman; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one niece, Judy Ackerman; and a brother-in-law, Edwin Bella.

The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, assisted the family with arrangements.
