Anderson, Clarence (1892? - 15 Jan 1920)

Clarence Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Anderson, former residents of this city (Owen, Clark County, Wis.) but now of Duluth, and a brother of Claude Anderson of this city, shot and killed his wife in Minneapolis Thursday afternoon. His wife was formerly Miss Martha Pankow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pankow, living four miles north and one mile west of the village of Withee, Clark County. Mrs. Anderson was a former clerk in the Louis Krom store before her marriage.

Claude Anderson received the message last Thursday night telling of the fate of his brother, and left the next morning for Minneapolis.

The following account of the tragedy is taken from Friday's Minneapolis Tribune.

"While the guest of friends who had brought his wife and himself together in an attempted reconciliation, Clarence Anderson, 27 years old, 2522 Fourth Av. South, shot and killed his wife, Martha, and then killed himself yesterday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Park, 2112 Fifth Av. South.

Leaving Mr. and Mrs. Anderson alone for a few minutes, as they seemed to have forgotten their differences, Mrs. Park returned from her husband's grocery store to fine the bodies huddled into a small hall. Mrs. Anderson had been shot through the heart.

In one of Mr. Anderson's pockets was a note signed by Mrs. Anderson which read, "I cannot come back to you. Don't ask me why, Martha."

Separated for one year from his wife, Anderson, who was a switchman for the Great Northern Railway, had lived at the boarding house of Mrs. Agnes Paulsen, 2522 Fourth Av. South. Mrs. Anderson has supported herself by working at a knitting factory. She lived at 328 Sixteen St. East.

Mrs. Anderson had started proceedings for a divorce on a charge of desertion…. (some of my copy was cut off)…. Lake, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were invited to dinner at the Park home yesterday. When Park saw them together, they chatted together. Mr. Park says he felt confident a reunion had bee effected.

Previously Anderson had intimated to Mr. Park that he was much worried over the pending divorce proceeding instituted by his wife.

"Mrs. Anderson was a sensitive, self-respected, fine woman," was the comment of Mr. Hall.

After investigation, Gilbert Seashore, coroner, said Anderson had committed murder suicide. The body of Anderson will be sent to West Duluth for burial. Relatives for Mrs. Anderson are being awaited."
