Bast, Michael (28 MAR 1865 - 11 OCT 1928)

Michael Bast, a former resident of Colby, Wis., died at St. Mary's Hospital at Wausau last Thursday, following an operation for kidney trouble. Funeral services were ehld at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Marshfield Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock and burial took place in the Marshfield Cemetery.

The deceased was born in New Franken, Wis., on March 28, 1865, thus reaching the age of sixty-three years, six months and thirteen days. He was married to Miss Rosie Kick at Marshfield in 1893, to which union eleven children were born, nine of who are still living. He and his family moved to Colby in 1903 and conducted the pop factory, which is now being operated by H. Reeves, Sr., until 1918. He and his family then moved to Marshfield, where he had a grocery store for several years. From there he went to Stratford and opened a bakery, which he conducted until several months ago, when he moved to Colby and lived with his brother, Peter, until he went to the hospital at Wausau several weeks ago, and where he died last Thursday, Oct. 11, 1927. He was a member of the Colby lodge of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Colby Foresters acted as pallbearers at the funeral.

Besides his widow, the deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. Walter Sternberg, Milwaukee; Oscar, Fanatchee, Wash.; Mrs. Herbert Gripenstrad and Mrs. Arthur Kohnhorst, Stratford; Alex and Rose, Detroit; Doris and Mrs. A. R. Mularkey, Wausau; and Miss Arley, residing with Mr. and Mrs. Gripenstrad, Stratford. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Peter Bast, Colby; Joseph Bast, Neillsville; John Bast, Kaukauna; and Mrs. Margaret Hoersch, Anawa.

Mr. Bast had a kindly and friendly disposition, which made many friens, who extend sympathy to the mourners.
