Henkel, Phillip (19 Jul 1848 - 30 Dec 1925)

Phillip Henkel, whose death was chronicled in this paper last week, died at Stone Lake, Sawyer Co., Wis., Dec. 30, 1925, of old age, after an illness of one year and three months. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Friday afternoon, Jan. 1st, Rev. Parker officiating, and interment made in the Colby Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Germany July 19, 1848, and came to this country in 1852, settling in Sheboygan Co., Wis. About fifty-five years ago, he was married to Julia Ann Baldwin, which union was blessed with seven children, two of who preceded their father to the ocean of eternity. About forty-seven years ago he and his wife came to Colby, Wis., when this country was practically a vast wilderness, and here he was engaged in the carpenter trade. The stern Reaper, however, called his wife on Feb. 18, 1902, and about ten years ago, the deceased moved to Stone Lake, Wis., where his declining years were spent.

The surviving children are Joe Henkel, Stone Lake, Wis., John Henkel, St. Paul, Minn., Wm. Henkel, Park Falls, Wis., Phil Henkel, Oshkosh, Wis., and daughter, St. Paul, Minn., and Ed Henkel, Greenwood, Wis.

He was a man of excellent habits and fine moral character, and sturdy constitution. He was invariably, a good neighbor and his family circle was a happy one. When he died, full of years and ready to be gathered to his Father, the grief that was felt over the close of his long career was widespread and sincedre. His best monument will be the good report that he has left behind him in the community in which he lived for over thirty-seven years.
