Ploof, Joseph (15 AUG 1843 - 26 Sep 1925)

Joseph Ploof was born Aug. 15, 1843 in Clinton Co., N.Y. In Aug. 1862 he enlisted in the 118th Infantry Regiment of New York. He took part in the battles of Quaker Ridge, Fredricksburg, Port Walthall, Arrowsfield Church, Fort Darling, Bermuda Hundred, Hatches Run, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, The Mine Explosion and High Bridge. He was wounded in the left shoulder by a "Minnie Ball" in the battle of Cold Harbor and was in the hospital about four months. He was honorably discharged in June 1865.

He was married to Miss Young of New York in 1865. He came to Fond du Lac, Wis. in 186x?, where he was employed in lumbering. Thirteen years later he moved to Ogema, where he had charge of a logging camp. About forty years ago he bought a farm near Dorchester, Clark County, Wis. and lived there until about twelve years ago when he moved to Abbotsford, where he lived until his death, Sept. 26, 1925. No children were born to them but they adopted a son, Charles. He was given a military funeral with a firing squad from the National Guards. He was buried from the St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Rev. Eisenman officiating. Interment took place in the Abbotsford Catholic Cemetery. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Malvina Ploof and Mrs. Frank White of Superior, Joe Ploof of Chicago and Mrs. Henry Beisner of Dorchester.
