Umhoefer, Mrs. Anton (27 Sep 1887 - 21 OCT 1918)

Died, at her home in our city (Colby, Wis.), Mrs. Anton Umhoefer, Monday evening Oct. 21, 1918, aged thirty-one years and twenty-four days, the cause of her death being neuritis of the heart.

Seldom has it been our duty to record as sudden a death. A dark gloom spread over the whole community when it was whispered from one to another Monday evening that "Mary was gone."

She was of an affectionate disposition, bright and winning in her ways, so that friendship's circle was to her a large one. Indeed, it May be said of her that "none knew her but to love her."

Only a few years ago, Sept. 9, 1913, she was married to Mr. Anton Umhoefer, of this place, who leaves with three small children, twin boys, Paul and James and one daughter, Mary, to mourn her loss.

Mrs. Umhoefer's illness was of brief duration, little less than two weeks. Seemingly with us today, active in life's round of duty and love, but gone tomorrow.

Deceased was born at Appleton, Sept. 27, 1887, and when eight years of age came to Colby with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Lyons, since which time she has made her home here. Here she played as a child, developed into beautiful girlhood, here she attended school, graduated and later taught in our schools, here her busy life was spent, her battles fought, her faithful service rendered to the world. In this dearest of all places to her, she lies down at length to sleep and rest.

To her the struggle and burden bearing of earth are ended, and we confidently trust that like one who awakens from a troubled dream she has awakened to see life's endless morning break and knows herself at home with all the vast throng of loved ones, missed from earth, safe about her. Her home instincts were strong here in this fevered world of disappointment. Her affection for friends and kindred was tender and abiding.

Among us all she ranked always as a woman of culture, refinement, sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted mother and a true friend, and with all a woman of heroic mould in bravely meeting the stern requirements and often the disappointments of life.

Gone from our sight, but because life and love are stronger than death she is ours still. She is still mother of the dear children, upon whom she doted with such clinging fondness, and the companion still of him who mourns earth's greatest loss, and May she not by this very transition wield over them a stronger force for goodness and truth than before.

Funeral services will be held this morning at 10:00 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father, Lachnit officiating. Father Wm. Reding of Grand Rapids, a former priest of the local parish, will deliver the sermon. Interment will be made in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Umhoefer has always been an earnest church worker, was president of the Christian Mothers Society and also a member of the E. F. U.
