Obituary of Gertrude M. Becker

Gertrude M. Becker, 100, Owen, died Sunday Aug. 31, 2003 at Clark County Health Care Center, Owen. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Withee. The Rev. Tom Myhre officiated. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, North Green Grove.

Gertrude M. Becker was born July 7, 1903, to Charles and Ida (nee Pipkorn) Wittlinget, in the Town of Beaver. She graduated from Loyal High School in 1923, and attended Oshkosh University. She married Otto Becker on Sept. 5, 1928. They farmed together in the Town of Beaver for many years. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, South Green Grove, and served as its organist for seven years. She was a charter member of the Ladies' Aid and served as treasurer for two terms. She also taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. In 1953, they moved to Owen, where she became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Withee, and its Ladies' Aid and Altar Guild. She worked at Griebenow Hardware for four years and was a nurses' aid for 27 years at the Clark County Health Care Center, retiring in 1978. Following her retirement, she became a volunteer at the Center and received an award for 30 years of volunteer service with the Center's Ladies' Aid. In 1994, she was honored as "Most Admired Senior Citizen" at the Wisconsin State Fair. She was a member of E.C.H.O., Clark County Health Care Center retirement group, and was a charter member of Hillcrest Homemakers. She also received awards for volunteer hours at Bethesda Thrift Shop, Wausau. She had the chance of meeting Charles Lindberg at a restaurant in Chicago that they both frequented and had several rides in his plane. Her interests included handcraft and tatting.

Survivors include one son, Otto (Jane) Becker, Owen; two grandchildren, Christopher (Jody) Becker, Verona, and Beth (Terry) Nicks, Eau Claire; and three great-grandchildren, Katie Becker, Brady Nicks, and Jessie Nicks.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Otto, on Jan. 24, 1985, six sisters, and two brothers.

Maurina Funeral Home, Owen, assisted the family with arrangements.
