Fuchs, Albert (15 DEC 1856 - 5 May 1915)

In the death of Dr. Albert Fuchs, the village of Loyal, Clark County, Wis., has lost a foremost citizen, who for twenty-four years has served the community chiefly in the capacity of a physician of unquestioned ability as mayor and postmaster and other offices.

Dr. Fuchs died after a brief illness, Wednesday May 5, 1915. His funeral services, which were under the auspices of the Woodmen, was held Saturday afternoon, the business houses being closed in respect to his memory.

Dr. Fuchs was born Dec. 15, 1856 at Madison, Wis. His father, Dr. J. P. Fuchs at that time was professor at the State University. Through the death of his father he was thrown upon his own resources at an early age. He spent several years at Sioux City, Iowa, in the drug business, then he decided to follow his father's footsteps and take up the study of medicine, entered Rush Medical College at Chicago, from which he graduated in 1882. For a time he practiced in Chicago and then went to Fredonia, Wis., where he married Miss Emma Detmering, who bore him four children, of whom are all living, Carl Fuchs, now of Des Moines, Iowa, and Gustav Fuchs, a senior in the High School. Dr. Fuchs was persuaded to go West in 1888, but found an over filled field and after a few years returned again to his native state, this time to settle at Loyal, Wis. Dr. Fuchs was well known throughout the state and stood high in the esteem of his brother practitioners. He contributed to the medical and scientific journals and took active part in the meetings and discussion of the State Medical Association. A student by nature he collected one of the best private scientific libraries in the state and it was here among his books that he found supreme satisfaction. The funeral services were made very impressive by hymns, Bible reading and prayer by the Rev. Powell and by various tributes to his life and character by friends who knew him best.
