Smith, Edward (29 APR 1831 - 10 Sep 1911)

Edward Smith was born April 29, 1831, on the banks of the Nation River, near Prescott, Canada, coming to this country in 1872. In 1858 he was married to Miss Priscilla King of Loyal, Clark County, Wis., to which union were born six sons, George, William, Frank, Orville, Sydney and Elmer, the latter dying in infancy. Priscilla Smith died Sept. 3, 1869. Edward Smith was united in marriage Dec. 31, 1871, to Miss Anna E. King, a sister of the first wife. To this union God gave seven children, Warren, Clark, Carrie, Alice, Ive, Nellie and Edward. Mr. Smith had been for many months a sufferer, enduring pain with great fortitude and courage and with always an uncomplaining spirit, until Sunday noon, Sept. 10, 1911, he peacefully and quietly slipped his mooring which anchored him to this life and set sail on that sea from which no traveler returns. His life was one of hard toil, but characterized by an unswerving loyalty to family, home and friends, an optimistic disposition, brightening the lives of all with whom he came in contact. With malice toward none and love for all he went about doing good. Although seriously ill in body for many weeks, he retained brightness of mind and a remarkable memory to the last. During the last few days he often conversed with his children concerning his boyhood and manhood, the humorous incidents connected with his life in the circus business, of the breaking of the bank carrying with it his savings, and of other incidents that were gotten for a time by others. One remarked to him, "Father, you have lived a long life," "yes," he replied, "eighty years but it seems short to me." He was known by the qualities which should be coveted by every man, a worker, honorable, upright, a friend to all, a man. He leaves his wife, twelve children and also many close friends to whom his loss will be long and keenly felt. The funeral was held from the Satsop M. E. Church, Rev. John H. Dill conducting the services, assisted by Rev. M. V. Moore, on Tuesday, Sept. 12th. (The Chehalis County Vidette)

Thank you so much for the Smith information which I have rec'd the past couple of days. Edward Smith was my great grandfather and I have found little information on him. I visited Loyal and found the gravesite of his first wife Priscilla (a letter of Smith info this past week told the story of Anna re-burying her sister in the cemetery at Loyal). On her tombstone were also the words showing a child buried there also. This was a mystery until this latest info stating that baby Elmer died in infancy. Thanks again for a big boost in researching my family. Shirley
