THE BAD COMES WITH THE GOOD

The drought being experienced by Central Wisconsin this year reminds us of the Dust Bowl years of the 1930's. While the farmers will have a low yield of oats, and are understandably worried about their other crops, we take heart in knowing that times have been worse. For lack of pasture, the cows were given the roadsides, and then were taken north to Ogema. Members of the family would take turns staying with the cows to milk. Around here a person could see the dust clouds come and know that the house would need yet another cleaning. On June 23, 1934, a windstorm came through, knocking down several barns. Tragedy came with it, as Verland Ayers was killed when his barn fell.

More recently, on May 23, 1964, a tornado went through the area blowing down the dairy barns of Ken Cole and Carl Soltow. Several buildings and roofs were damaged and trees uprooted.
