Hills, Catherine (22 Sep 1819 - 25 Jul 1909)

Mrs. Jesse Hills died on Sunday evening at ten o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Meugel, after great suffering for two weeks with the exception of the last two days. Just before she died she opened her eyes and looked around and passed away with a smile on her face. Impressive funeral services were held at two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon at the house, after which all that was mortal of this grand old mother was tenderly conveyed to our silent city.

Deceased was born in the Mohawk Valley, N.Y., on Sept. 22, 1819, and had she lived until the 22nd of next months she would have been ninety years of age. She moved to Canada with her parents when but eleven years of age and was married to William Smith in Nov. 1840, and soon moved to Wisconsin. Of this union two sons were born, Volney and Elijah. She was left a widow in the year 1850 and was married to Jesse Hills at Iron Ridge, Wis. Of this union two daughters were born, Delight and Annie. She was again left a widow in the year 1862 and remained on her farm until the year 1878, when she moved to Loyal, Clark County, Wis., where she has since made her home.

Grandma Hills will be long remembered by the older inhabitants of the place for her deeds of charity and help in sickness. At the age of 19 she united with the Methodist Church and has always paid liberally to the gospel and until within the last ten years has helped whenever she had opportunity in every good cause.

Her life was gentle, but like the still water it was deep. In her heart of hearts she carried those she loved. The great destroyer had placed his signet on her brow and today hundreds who loved her living, mourn her dead. The floral offerings were many.

She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Meugel, and one son, V. W. Smith, both from here.

This obit is great. It contains information I don't have. Catherine was my husband's ggg grandmother. Her husband Jesse Hills died near Corinth, MS during the Civil War.

Thanks, Shirley Hubbard
