Fatal Accident

Last Thursday morning, a man named Louis Loungta, aged about twenty-eight years, in sliding down from a hay loft in a barn of Rob’t Ross’ farm, about ten miles north of this village, struck against a piece of board that had been nailed against the beams forming the bay to keep the hay fork from catching when the hay was being elevated to the mow. The board was about six feet in length and had been broken, or split off, in such a manner as to leave the end very sharp, which entered the parenium, penetrating the bowels, breaking off and requiring the aid of the surgeon’s knife to remove the pieces, which operation was performed by Drs. Thompson of this village, and Thomas, of Greewood, on Sunday last. One sliver entered the small intestines and the patient died of perforation of the bowels within a few hours after the operation was performed, the piece of wood having acted as a plug and prevented the emptying of the intestines until it was removed. From the first there was little hope for the unfortunate man, the wound being of the most painful and dangerous nature, and the examination proved that no human skill could stay the hand of Death. Of the friends of the deceased but little is known here, but he is said to have been a relative of Anton. St. Mary, who keeps the Montreal Hotel at LaCrosse. He had been on Black River several years, engaged as a laborer in the lumbering camps, on farms and wherever work was found to be done, making many acquaintances and friends who will regret to hear of the sad ending of his life.
