Harland Schultz

Harland W. Schultz, age 68, of Thorp, passed away Monday, March 31, 2003 at Phoenix Mayo Hospital in Phoenix, AZ.

Harland Wallace Schultz was born on January 14, 1935, the youngest of 5 sons of Otto and Emma Schultz of Mattoon, Wisconsin. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Mattoon.

He grew up on a dairy farm near Mattoon where he also attended Mattoon Public Schools graduating in May, 1953. He entered the University of Wisconsin at River Falls.

Harland was also a member of the Wisconsin National Guard at that time.

It was at this time that he met Beverly Stovern. They were married at Holden Norwegian Lutheran Church in Colfax on December 31, 1955. They had a wonderful 47-year marriage journey. Their two sons Craig Harland and Kent Harland entered this family in 1963 and 1966. They enjoyed many experiences and travel, especially to their cabin on Old Abe Lake in Jim Falls, WI.

Harland enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 where he served three years in the Veterinary Corps. He and Beverly lived in Williamsburg, VA for two years where they worked at Fort Eustis Army Base. Upon his discharge, he entered the UW Madison where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Education and Horticulture/Landscaping. While at the university, he worked as a USDA food inspector out of Madison.

Upon graduation, he accepted an agricultural teaching position in 1961, at Thorp Public High School. During these years he met the area families and also conducted adult night school classes. Many of his friends to date are those with whom he and Bev taught school in Thorp.

In 1961, he served as Farm Management Agent for Green County.

One year later he received a call from People’s Exchange Bank in Thorp to establish a farm loan service to the community, which became his lifetime career. When this bank was sold in the 80’s, he received a call to establish a branch bank in Thorp for Northwestern Bank of Chippewa Falls. He and several co-workers took on this challenge and he managed the bank until an immediate health change forced him to retire in July 1999.

Harland was very active in his church, community activities and bank organizations. He was instrumental in many unique improvements in these endeavors. He had a winning smile and kind word for all. His strong faith and sense of humor will always be with us even through we will miss him immensely.

In addition to his wife and two sons, he is also survived by daughters-in-law Lora (Gerrits) and Pam (Millikan); four grandchildren; Jordan-8, Kylea-8, Olivia-3 and Mason-5. He also leaves several sisters and brothers-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the strength for many of these family members. He had the unique ability to stay calm in facing and handling critical situations.

Along with his family, his other loves were dogs, trees, making wood on his 40 with family and friends, playing cards and golfing.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, April 5, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thorp with Rev. Daniel Welch officiating, which was followed by a dinner at the Thorp Legion Hall at 12:30 p.m. Visitation was from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Thorp Funeral Home on Friday evening, April 4. Family members served as pallbearers. Interment was at East Thorp Cemetery.
