home in Merced, California according to word received here.

He is survived by a daughter, Miss Irma Schmoll, and two sons, Louis and
Joseph Schmoll, Merced, California, all former Marshfield, Wis. residents.

Training of tinsmiths
"The tinsmith learned his trade, like many other artisans, by serving an
apprenticeship of 4 to 6 years with a master tinsmith. Apprenticeships were
considered "indentures" and an apprentice would start out first with simply
cleaning the shop, polishing tools, keeping the fires lit, filing sharp
edges and polishing finished pieces. Later he would trace patterns on sheets
and cut them out, then soldering joints, and inserting rivets. Finally, he
was allowed to cut out and complete objects.[2][page needed] He learned
first to make cake stamps (cookie cutters), pill boxes and other simple
items. Next, he formed objects such as milk pails, basins, or cake and pie
pans. Later he tackled more complicated pieces such as chandeliers and
crooked-spout coffee pots. After his apprenticeship was completed, he
then became a journeyman, not yet being a master smith employing others.
Many young tinsmiths took to the road as peddlers or tinkers in an effort to
save enough money to open a shop in town." Wikipedia

May 1925--The interior of the First National Bank has been recently improved by the addition of a new steel ceiling and by being completely redecorated. The ceiling, which is a substantial and permanent improvement, was put on by John Schmoll. The painting and tinting was done by Sherman and Mertes. The finish is particularly attractive being a form of stipple work that is very pleasing. In the open spaces along the upper wall, are shields and eagles painted in national colors by C. H. Chandler and well executed.

Bio: Schmoll, "Lena" Magdelena (4 Augl 1859 - 1 Augl 1907)
The former wife of August Schmoll, "Lena", was the first of her Prussian family to be born in Wisconsin. Her parents, Nicholas and Maria (Brighner) Schill were living in Centerville at the time of her birth, their 5th child and 4th daughter. Her parents were among the first settlers there. Lena lived her entire life in Wisconsin and at the time of the 1905 Census, she was the landlady for the Wisconsin Hotel which was located between the home of Francis Franklin and Ole Johnson in Neillsville's 2nd Ward. She had a 22 yr. old daughter, Elizabeth and and 21 yr. old son, John, who was a full time bar tender. At the time the 1905 Census was taken, there were a dozen boarders living at the hotel: 40 yr. old, Pennsylvania born day laborer, Johnson Emery ; 62 yr. old Mike Shea from Canada who worked on area farms; 46 yr. old capitalist, Cecil Utebeck who was born in Wisconsin; 40 yr. old laborer, Ole Lindred of Norway; 24 yr. old Norwegian, William Marsch along with Wisconsin born Ralph Blackman who were both painters; a horseman named Bert Neville, who was born in Wisconsin in 1872; 28 yr. old John Crowbar who whose parents had moved from New York to Wisconsin where he was born in 1877 and was then working in the livery in Neillsville; 24 yr. old, Wisconsin native, Edward Payson who labored in the winery; George Payne who was another Wisconsin native, was her youngest boarder being only 16 yrs. old worked for the City of Neillsville; and Max Liehish who began his life in Russia in 1881 at the age of 24 was a peddler & buyer in Neillsville, Wisconsin.
*Centerville, Wis. derived its name from the fact that it is located half way between the cities of Manitowoc and Sheyboygan.

For many years an old landmark, within Neillsville, Wisconsin,
was the
Wisconsin Hotel.
Built
about 1870,
it offered
accommodations for loggers, lumberjacks and transients in those
early days of the city. Later on, it was renamed the
Foster Hotel.
It
stood
at the corner
of E 6th St. and Court Street at the bottom of the hill (north
side of E 6th St and the East side of Court St) across from the
Courthouse.
