Baxter, Joseph R. (2 Dec 1839 - 5 JUN 1908)

Joseph Roach Baxter, whose health has been gradually failing for the past two years, died of Bright's disease on Friday evening, June 5, 1908, at his home at Eidsvold, Clark County, Wis., aged 68 years, 6 months and 3 days. Mr. Baxter had been as well as usual during the day, but shortly after retiring passed away without a moment's notice. He was the son of David and Olive Covey Baxter and was born in Canada on Dec. 2, 1839, and came to Illinois with his parents at an early age, where he grew to manhood. In 1861, at Lincoln's first call for troops, he, in company with nineteen other young men, offered his services as a sharp shooter and six months later enlisted as a private in Co. F. 45th Illinois infantry, and was promoted for bravery on several occasions, and distinguished himself as an able officer, retiring with the rank of captain of his company at the close of his career as a soldier.

In 1869 he was united in marriage with Daraxa Covey, who, with one son, Henry Baxter, survive him, another child, a daughter, having died at Marshfield, Wis. some years ago.

The funeral services took place at the residence at Eidsvold on Monday forenoon, Rev. J. B. Bachman officiating. Several of his Comrades of Aabra Welcome Post No. 163, G. A. R., of which Post deceased was Commander for several years, acted as pallbearers, and accompanied the remains to this village, from which place the remains were taken to Marshfield on the noon train, where interment took place the same afternoon.
