Holzhausen, Walter (24 Dec 1882 - 25 Dec 1901)

On Thursday morning last Herman Holzhausen received a telegram announcing the accidental death of his son Walter, which had occurred the day previous near Fort Wingate, New Mexico. The young man had enlisted in the United States service on March 21, 1901, and became a member of Troop G 14th Cavalry, and was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas until a few months ago, when his command was transferred to Fort Wingate. Always a lover of horses he became an expert rider long before he entered the cavalry service, and with reluctance his parents finally consented to his enlistment. He was born in this village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) on Dec. 24, 1882, and was therefore just nineteen years old. The remains arrived here on Monday, the funeral taking place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday from the M. E. Church, Rev. Bachman officiating. The grave at the cemetery was handsomely decorated and a salute was fired by the son of veterans befitting the burial of a soldier. The floral pieces resting on the casket were presented by a number of young ladies and gentlemen of the village and were beautiful, betokening in a measure the esteem in which the young man was held by his former schoolmates.
