Biography for Mary (Huntzicker) Snyder.

She was born January 4, 1924, in Greenwood, WI in a log cabin built by her Grampa John and grew up on the dairy farm he settled.

She was often ill as a child, missed lots of school, but participated in all activities enthusiastically and played baritone in the band, although she couldn't march and blow at the same time.

Lot of willpower, endlessly competitive with her brother John, attended University of WI at Menomonie with her sister Jane. She graduated from college the same year as her brother John (although it was wartime and he had started a year after she did). Her graduation was the last time all 7 Huntzicker's were together.

Her father was Fred, mother Maud and siblings: Jane, (Mary was second born), John, Ann, and Bill.

Came West with her friend Peggy Pace & taught at Washtucna High School. She was met at Spokane by Mr. Hansen, the Superintendent, whose first question was "Did you vote for Joe McCarthy?" (since she was from Wisconsin)--this was before she developed her later political & social consciousness. One of her first students in Washtucna was Bill's younger sister, Ann.

Met Bill Snyder in Washtucna when he came to fix the stoves for the hot lunch program--he took her up in his airplane for their first date (noted prominently in the pilot's log he still keeps). His daughter Ruth wrote a story for their 40th Wedding Anniversary, faced on interviews with Mary & Bill.

Married August 7th, 1948--traveled back to Wisconsin for the wedding & honeymoon in Canada on the way back to Washtucna.
