Brown, Catherine (6 MAY 1860 - 16 DEC 1917)

Mrs. Catherine Brown died at her home in this city, Sunday, Dec. 16, 1917, after a lingering illness of over two years. She had suffered long and much, but met life’s ills patiently and with resignation.

Catherine Elizabeth Selves was born at Buffalo, N.Y., May 6, 1860, and came with her parents to Clark County, Wis. when she was six years old. They settled on Pleasant Ridge, and there she grew to womanhood. On Sept. 18, 1878 she was married to Henry Brown. They came to Neillsville to live and this has been her home ever since. Mr. Brown died in June 1906.

Mrs. Brown was a woman of beautiful character; a loving and helpful mother and devoted wife and her kindness as a friend and neighbor dispelled all enmity. She was quiet and home loving, yet fond of friends. She was a member of the Order of Eastern star and the royal Neighbors, among whom she was regarded with deepest affection.

She leaves to mourn her death two sons, Forest A. Brown of Kansas City, Mo., and Herbert L. Brown of this city, one grandson, Walter Earl Brown; she leaves also four brothers: William Selves of Lac du Flambeau; Thomas Selves of Colby; Elmer Selves of Neillsville; Edward and Richard Selves of the town of Grant, and one sister, Mrs. Estella Snyder of Neillsville.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. The Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors attended as a body.

Amazing, since both of my lines of ancestors are Brown and Selves. My fathers name was Brown and my mothers maiden name was Selves. Her father was Charles Edward, who was the son of George. I believe the connection to me is the Selves, not the Browns. But one never knows!!!!
