Mrs. Susan Counsell died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James E. Hughes, in the town of Grant, Clark County, Wis., Sunday, Sept. 23, 1917.

Mrs. Counsell was one of the pioneer women of Clark County, and lived to see it pass every stage in its development from a wilderness to a community of modern homes.

Susan Mary Pope was born to George and Mary Pope at Cambridgeshire, Eng., July 12, 1842. At the age of twelve she came to America with her parents, who settled in Clark County, where the town hall of Grant now stands. On Oct. 28, 1858 she was united in marriage to Henry Counsell and they began housekeeping on Pleasant Ridge on the land they made into a beautiful farm home and where they resided until the fall of 1906, when they moved to their residence in Neillsville. Mr. Counsell died in 1910 and since then she has made her home with her children, most of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Hughes.

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Counsell, five dying in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Ida Lowe, died after reaching womanhood. The four surviving children are William Henry of Milwaukee, Oregon; Joseph E., who recently moved from his farm on the ridge to this city; O. E. Counsell and Mrs. James E. Hughes, both residing on Pleasant Ridge, the former on the old Counsell farm.

Mrs. Counsell’s life work was well done. Her home and family were well cared for. Her duties as wife, mother and neighbor were never slighted. She loved the farm and all its various interests, adding her industry and economy to her husband’s efforts in hewing a home out of the wilderness. Her interest in the highest things of farm life May be known from the fact that this year is the first time she failed to attend the fair since the Clark County Agricultural Society was formed, forty-five years ago. For many years she sent a weekly letter of neighborhood news to this paper from Pleasant Ridge, showing rare spirit and helpfulness in local affairs.

In many ways the influence of this good woman will be felt in this community for years to come.

The funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hughes Wednesday, Rev. S.B. Pinney officiating. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery.
