Vine, Fred J. (10 NOV 1844 - 10 Feb 1917)

Fred J. Vine, who died at his home in Crandon Feb. 10, 1917, was born at Buffalo, N.Y., Nov. 10, 1844. He grew to manhood there, and there was married in 1864 to Miss Mary Buss. They came to Wisconsin soon after their marriage and settled on land in the town of Grant, Clark County, where they cleared a farm and established their home. Mr. Vine became one of the prominent men of his town and county, serving on the county board, and for many years being president of the Lynn Insurance Co. He continued to carry on his farm until 1892, when he was appointed farm superintendent of the Lac du Flambeau Agency, which position he held until about ten years ago, when he went into the hardware business with his son Arthur at Crandon, where he remained until his death.

Mr. Vine was a man far above the average in intelligence, moral worth, and all those qualities that go to make a good citizen. He had positive views on all public questions, based on a study of merits, and was not led by any chance circumstances. He was just and fair in his dealing with men, and while a strong partisan in politics, he never let prejudice rule his action, but met opponents in a fair and friendly manner. More citizens such as Fred J. Vine would mean a greater strength and glory to our country.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife and seven children: Mrs. Henry Carter, Mrs. Arlo Huckstead, Fred, George and Frank, all living in the town of Grant; Arthur living in Crandon, and Mrs. Fred Major in Michigan.

The funeral took place Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Pleasant Ridge Church, Rev. L.B. Colman preaching the funeral sermon, and the Masons, of which order deceased was a prominent member, having charge of the services.
