WILLIAM FRANK LEICHTNAM & Barbara Kaudy, daughter of Mathias and Marie (Botey) Kaudy, was born on 16, August 1870 in Neosho, WI and died on 6, Feb. 1936 in Hurley, WI of cerebral sclerosis. She is buried in Ironwood, MI. She was married on 29, May 1890 in Colby, WI (town of Hull, Marathon county side) to William Frank Leichtnam who was born in St Louis, MO. They were separated on 5, Oct 1908 and divorced on 17, May 1909 in Phillips, WI. The divorce papers charge Will with cruel and inhuman treatment. She was awarded the custody of their tow infant children, LeRoy and Vivenne, DeLacey being seventeen years old at that time. Their marriage license shows Will to be the son of Joseph and Barbary. In both the 1880 US census and the 1881 History of Northern WI, she is listed by the name of Barbary, which is Alsatian origin. According to one relative, she changed her name to Belle when se left Uncle Will to live with her girl friend Hattie. However, the record of marriage, misfiled in the town of Colby, Clark county side, shows her name as Belle. Will was a logger. Will and his brothers went to Montana to be ranchers. They put up fences and reputedly got the local ranchers upset, because they wished it to remain open range. Will was charged with manslaughter and sentence to less than five years for shooting an under-Sheriff. He was supposedly framed to stop the brothers from putting up fences. Will was reputedly of Luxembourg ancestry.

Family Notes

I pick up the trail from where William Frank Leichtman marries Sadie Behreandt. John we had e-mailed earlier in 2005. I believe , I had mailed you some copies from the Park Falls Herald detailing the Montana shooting of Orville Bittle on Dec. 3, 1911. Since then, I have done some poking around in various newspapers. I can access it for free via the More library information system using my library card code. Do you have this kind of thing available from your library? I can also access it via my subscription to ancestry.com. I also beleive it is available off the internet for $5.99 per month. I have found articles about the whole shooting business in the following locations:

Anaconda Standard 29 Dec. 1911
16 Mar 1912
17 Mar 1912
19 Mar. 1912
23 Mar 1912
Billings Daily Gazette Dec. 17 1911
Ironwood Daily Globe (Michigan/ Hurley, Wisconsin)
Belle obituary - around 6 Feb. 1936
Jack Leichtnam (Belles grandson) hunting accident April 23, 1949 also in various Wisconsin state-wide papers such
Milwaukee Journal etc.

Leila Leichtnam(Mrs. Leroy L) obituary Nov. 16 1949

I also have various obits such as Sadie's and her children. Sadie lived in Vancouver Washington at the end of her life. I don't have William's obit or final burial spot. I did contact RAOGK once to do a look-up but never received a reply. We would probably have to order a death certificate to get some info or have a library do a search out there for an obit.

If you can't find this stuff on newspaper archive.com, send me your address again and I will happily xerox whatever you need and send it along. I picked alot of this stuff up piece-meal since we last corresponded. It is difficult when nobody spells the name the same way!! Do you have any pictures of Belle, William, Leroy or DeLacy.

Lastly, have you come across a Virginia Leichtnam? and who is the Kath. Leichtnam of the murder case in Wisconsin in the 1970's any connection to our branch here?

Well, plenty to think about! and I am delighted to hear from you. Becky Behreandt, Butternut Wisconsin

Hi, I came across your article about William Leichtnam and wonder if he remarried after his divorce. I have a Sadie B. Behreandt married to a ? Leichtnam. unknown date, Park Falls , Wi. I know Belle, Vivian, Leroy , Delacey lived here in Town of Lake in 1927 or so because they are listed as residents in newspaper article hanging in Town of lake hall. Also Park Falls herald carries microfilm (library) detailing WF Leichtnam legal troubles in montana in 1912. Sadie Behreandt Leichtnam had 3 children and lived in Montana and Washington. Robert Frank, Dan D. and Sadie Lorraine. But I find no references to her husband whatsoever. Any ideas who he might be? Also George, Gusta, Hazel Leichtnam as listed living in Town of Lake in 1927. Price County. Looking forward to hearing from you. Becky Behreandt. Butternut Wi
