Huckstead, Henry (23 Jul 1833 - 9 Dec 1915)

Henry Huckstead died in the early hours of Thursday morning, Dec. 9, 1915, at the home of his son H.O. Huckstead on Pleasant Ridge. He was found in the morning as if asleep, apparently having passed away peacefully without a struggle as he slept.

He was born at Staplehurst, Kent, England, July 23, 1833, and grew to manhood there. On Nov. 3, 1857 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Holland. They came to America in 1872, coming directly to Clark County and settled on a farm on Pleasant Ridge, where they lived for 13 years, when they moved to Iowa. His wife died in 1905 and since that time he has lived with his children, four of who are living: Mrs. Kate Mowe of Pella, Iowa; Mrs. Mercy Coifin of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Elizabeth Hills and H.O. Huckstead of Pleasant Ridge.

Mr. Huckstead was a man of beautiful character, a Christian gentleman whose chief pleasure was to work in every way to make the world better. He had great faith in the effectiveness of the Sunday school in molding Christian character and was a helpful worker in it. His was a well rounded life, rich in those things that make for righteousness and the forward movement of mankind. Funeral services were held at the home Friday morning, Rev. L.B. Colman preaching the funeral sermon, and that day accompanied by H.O. Huckstead and Mrs. Hills. The remains were taken to Bradgate, Iowa for burial. Services were also held there.
