Vandercook, Eddy M. (7 Feb 1863 - 6 Dec 1889)

Died, at the residence of his aunt in Lodi, Wis., on Friday, Dec. 6th, 1889, of consumption, Eddy M. Vandercook, in the 27th years of his age.

Notwithstanding, this intelligence did not come wholly unexpected, it was received with sincere sorrow by the many acquaintances and friends of the deceased.

Eddy M. Vandercook was born at Newberg, Ozaukee Co., Feb. 7th, 1863, where he resided until the fall of 1876, when he came to Colby, Clark Co., Wis. with his mother, brothers and sister, being then little more than thirteen years of age. Although never of robust health he was always industrious, and devoted to his studies and ever evinced a strong desire to be of assistance to his mother. Before he reached the age of 15 he passed a successful examination and received a third grade certificate licensing him to teach in Clark Co. He soon secured a school at a distance of several miles from his home, but wishing to be of as much service to his mother as possible, he walked the distance twice a day that he might board at home. Notwithstanding some of the scholars were much older than himself, he kept the school under good control and gave excellent satisfaction as a teacher. In the spring of 1879 he attended the Normal school at Oshkosh, taking the spring course at that institution. In the fall of the same year he was engaged to teach the primary department of our village school where he gave the best of satisfaction. The following spring he again attended the Normal school during the spring term, when he again returned home and taught several terms in the Feind district in this town. Later he spent about a year at Edwardsville, Ill. In the spring of 1885 he, with his brother, G. E., purchased the Spencer Tribune, and did the editorial work thereon until the winter of "87-’88, when on account of failing health he spent the winter at Lookout Mountain, Tenn., returning early in the spring. Since that time he has been compelled to do as little work as possible and this last fall gave up entirely, sold his interest in the Tribune to G. E. and shortly after went to Rockford, Ill., to try to build up his constitution, but, not deriving any benefit from the treatment he received there, came back to Colby, where he remained until Nov. 13th, when he went to Chicago, but, being of a restless disposition, and believing the end to be near, he left there and went to Lodi Nov. 25th, where resided a favorite aunt with whom he remained until the summons came on Friday the 6th inst.

Mrs. G. E. Vandercook went to Lodi on Tuesday of last week and was with Eddy in his last hours.

The remains were brought to Spencer by Mrs. G. E. Vandercook, arriving Saturday evening. The funeral occurred at Spencer on Monday afternoon, conducted by the Odd Fellows, of which order he was an honored member, and was largely attended by sincere friends of the deceased from up and down the line. The discourse being delivered by Rev. G. M. Foster, from the text: "The Lord is My Shepherd, I Shall Not Want," selected by the deceased. At the cemetery the impressive funeral ceremony of the Odd Fellows was read and the remains laid to rest beneath the bright sprigs of evergreen offered by the members of the order as a last memento to the purity of the spirit of a departed brother.

The pallbearers were Messrs. Geo. Farrington, M. P. Hartford, Ed Kayhart, Spencer, J. F. Sims, J. J. Shafer, Colby, and Wm. Wagner, Thorp.

Ed Vandercook, as he was common….(the last sentence was cut off my copy)
