The Korman-Ghent Carriage Factory and Machine Shop

Harvesting ice on O'Neill Creek started soon after Neillsville became a village. The Neillsville Brewery, located above the south creek bank, needed a large supply of ice each year for their brewery storehouse. Home owners and other businesses purchased blocks of ice for refrigeration purposes until electrical refrigerators and freezers became accessible. Tibbett Ice & Fuel carried on the ice harvesting in the early 1900s, storing it in the shed along the north bank of O'Neill Creek. The Korman-Ghent Carriage Factory and Machine Shop, which faced Hewett Street, is visible in the background.

Concerning the article above (Tibbitt's cutting ice in the early 1900's), my research shows Tibbett's did not arrive in Neillsville until late in the year of 1926 or early 1927.  The earliest record of them cutting ice I have found is an article in the Neillsville Press 1/9/30 that they were beginning to harvest ice.  Then an article in the Neillsville Press 3/20/30 that they shipped 48 carloads of ice to Marshfield.  Prior to the Tibbitt's coming to Neillsville they were involved in the New Dells Lumber Company in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.  I have glass plate negatives from this period.  I thought that initially once they arrived here did some minor logging in the area, but in the first year or two were concerned with setting up their coal bins along the railroad tracks.  Tibbitt's delivered ice in Neillsville until some time in the middle 50's by horse draw wagon, as I remember as a young lad chasing after the wagon on hot summer days to get the chips.  The 1906 Clark County Fair Book it lists Herman Wegner as the ice delivery man.

I had thought that I had another person who harvested ice in my listings, but did not find it.  Perhaps it is with some papers I have not added as yet.  Steve Roberts (Clark Co., Wis. Historian)
