Jean Batten

ABBOTSFORD - Jean M. Batten, 85, Abbotsford, Wisconsin, died Monday June 7, 2004, at Continental Manor Nursing Home, Abbotsford.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2004, at Maurina Funeral Home, Dorchester. The Rev. Irv Case will officiate.

Burial will be in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Batten, Wes Batten, Gary Hardinger, Norm Kinsey, Dennis Barkow and Jacob Herden.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.

Jean was born April 7, 1919, in Oshkosh to William and Matie (Ritchie) McFetridge. She graduated from Medford High School in 1937, Stevens Point Normal School in 1939 and University Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a library science degree in 1965. Jean and Lynn Batten were married in Medford on June 25, 1943. They moved to Abbotsford in 1947, where they farmed in the town of Holton. Jean taught at Bruckerville School and later Liberty School. She then served as librarian for the Medford Junior High School until her retirement in 1984. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, including trips to the Holy Land and British Isles. Jean was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Dorchester, where she had many years of service as a Sunday school teacher, Bruckerville Homemakers, Holton 4-H leader, Eastern Star and Retired Teachers Association.

Jean is survived by one sister, Betty Laabs of Sarasota, Fla.; three sons Robert (Jeanne) Batten of Marshfield, William (Geri) Batten of Marshfield and Les (Bonnie) Batten of East Troy; six grandchildren, Elizabeth (Gary) Hardinger, David (Bobbi) Batten, Wes Batten, Jacob (Jennifer) Herden, Nathan Batten and Lindsay Batten; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lynn, and one brother Lauren.
