Happe, William R. Sr. (Mar. 20, 1859 - Aug. 18, 1944)

W. R. Happe, 85, a Fremont resident since 1900, died at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire, the result of a heart attack.

The Rev. S.A. Gutknecht will officiate at funeral services Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Immanuel Evangelical Church, Chili, and interment will be made in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the home until the time of the funeral services.

Mr. Happe was born in Cooperstown, Manitowoc County, March 20, 1859, and was married Nov. 16, 1887, at Lomira to Lydia Messer.

After receiving his education at Mayville High School and Oshkosh Normal, Mr. Happe taught school in and near Lomira nine winters, operating a farm during the summer. In 1900 he moved to a farm near Chili, which he operated until 1930. At that time he built a home in Chili, where he resided until the time of his death.

He was town clerk for 14 years, town treasurer for nine years, school clerk for many years, secretary-treasurer of the Lynn Telephone Company, manager of the Chili Livestock Shipping Association, secretary-treasurer of the Riverside Co-operative cheese factory, and notary public. He also served as president of the Building Association at the time the new Immanuel Evangelical Church was built.

A member of the Evangelical Church since boyhood, Mr. Happe is survived by his widow; four children, Miss Alma Happe, teacher at Rochelle, IL.; Mrs. Albert (Irene) Lindow, on a farm near Chili; William R. Happe Jr., operator of a general store at Chili; and Miss Elda Happe, teacher at Eau Claire; and five grandchildren.

Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
