Church of Christ celebrates 100 years

By GENE KEMMETER of The Gazette The Church of Christ in Stevens Point will observe its 100th birthday next weekend, the oldest church of the denomination in Wisconsin.

The congregation is celebrating on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, at its newest church, 1112 Sandy Lane.

Friday's events at 6:30 p.m. will revolve around "Reacquaintance and Refreshments." providing a time for people to meet at the building and visit with others they May not have seen for awhile.

Saturday's event begins with a "Sign Our Guest Book" session that includes a light breakfast from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Following that is an introduction, church history - "a yarn spun by the Rev. Bill Mielke" and then a noon lunch.

After lunch the program includes church history - "a tale of old from Carl Frazier," "Sing through the Ages" - songs that span a century lead by Tim Thompson and then "Open Floor" with visiting preachers and members reminiscing.

Those planning on attending should contact Travis Thompson at 457-6952 by Saturday, April 13, with any questions and reservations so the congregation can better plan the lunch and snacks.

On Sunday, April 21, the Rev. Robert Dreiling will preach at the regular service.

The history of the congregation actually predates the start in Stevens Point.

Wilson Mallory came from Canada to work with a congregation in Knowlton that had started in 1886.

About 1897, Mallory started the Church of Christ in the town of Linwood, making his home with Oscar Benedict and his wife, Amanda Nieman. He baptized them in Mill Creek, near their home.

The church practices baptism by immersion, and the congregation used Mill Creek, the Wisconsin River and the Plover River for the initial baptisms in the area. Now, the denomination's churches have tanks with clean, heated water for baptisms.

That first congregation began meeting in the school in Linwood and members included Enoch Morgan, Edmond Frost, Fred Athorp and the Whitneys.

Later, Mallory held meetings at Crockers Landing in the town of Dewey, north of Stevens Point, baptizing the Caters, the Deans, the Barges, the Woods, Vet Andrews, Jessie Wood and his wife, Burns the banker and the Neals, according to a short history of the church written by Ethel Benedict.

Members of the Linwood congregation, as well as those in Stevens Point help buy a lot in 1902 and erected a building on a site on Ellis Street, where the Berea Baptist Church, 2216 Ellis St., is located today. Members of the Knowlton and Dancy congregations also joined as the numbers in their congregations dwindled.

The Stevens Point leaders at the time were William "Grandpa" Cater; his son, Jim Cater; Datus R. Dean; Robert Barge and his mother; and a Mrs. Whitney, who was one of the earliest members.

Mallory, who was trained at Nashville Bible School, the forerunner of David Lipscomb College, later married one of the Crocker girls and moved to Granton, where he worked in a bank.

Yet he kept his ties with Stevens Point. He returned to the city for services in the morning of every fourth Sunday and then went to the school in Linwood in the afternoon, Ethel Benedict wrote in her history.

She said Mallory baptized Oscar Benedict's four oldest children, Edmond Frost's children, Fred Athorp's children, the Nieman children and some of Jessie Wood's children.

Later meetings of the congregation in Linwood were held in the Edmond Frost home, with Jessie Wood teaching the men, Mrs. Frost teaching the older children and Myrtle Frost teaching the younger children.

After Amy Benedict started teaching and had a car, Ethel Benedict wrote that the Linwood members started to meet in Stevens Point, partly because the congregation was dwindling to just members of the Barge, Wood, Cater, Dean, Benedict, Frost and Athorp families.

The congregation continued to grow and in 1953 moved to the former Trinity Lutheran Church, now Turning Point Dance Academy, 1700 Strongs Ave.

The congregation moved into its new house in 1971 and has about 90 members.

Preachers at the church through the years included Mallory, Datus Dean, Harry Ficklin, Mr. Swanson, Leslie Diestalkamp, Charles Hill, Harry Lowry, Melvin Weldon, Carl Frazier, Merle King, Milton Landrum, Darrell O'Rourke, James Dillenges, Alfred Mielke, Robert Dreiling, Joe Mitchell, James Bellcock, Tim Huffman, H.K. Ballard, John Datum, Tim Thompson (great-grandson of Datus Dean), and George Browning.

William Price Mallory's parents were Wilson Price Mallory and his first wife, Louisa Hallock who he married 26 Jun 1845 Meaford ON. Wilson Price Mallory married Catherine Cordelia Williams second.

Wilson Price Mallory was son of Vanranselaer Price Mallory and martha "Patty" Hutchinson.

"…It was these two families, the Mallorys and the Seamans which led a migration to St. Vincent, north of what is now Highway 26 in the fall of 1835.

Price Mallory and his sister Huldah’s husband David Seaman inspected the tract in the summer of 1834 and planned a group migration the following year.

Mallory, on behalf of fifty families petitioned the Governor at Montreal for a block of 10,000 acres of land for a settlement by UEL claimants and those eligible for unassigned Military grants for the War of 1812. The land in question was from Lot 19 to the Lake on the south and from Nottawasagee Bay on the east to Concession 9 on the west. Sydenham township was still Indian territory until 1836….

…Price Mallory, his wife, Patty, his sister, Hulda, and her husband David Seamans, their children and others totaling 27 arrived by boat to what is now Georgian Beach north of Meaford on September 30, 1835 after a harrowing journey…

….In the winter of 1848, in one last futile attempt, Price Mallory drove his horse and cutter to Montreal to talk to the Governor of Upper Canada, Sir Charles Metcalfe, but the Governor was so ill that he was packing to leave for England.

On the return trip Price Mallory died, still with the deed to his land. His son Wilson finally got it when he wished to sell"

Year 2000 is the 165th anniversary of the Mallory settlement by Helene Weaver The Express, Wednesday August 16, 2000.

Vanranselaer Price Mallory was son of Lemuel Mallory and Amy Patterson. Lemuel was son of Nathaniel Mallory and Abiah Beardley. Lemuel and his father nathaniel died in 1808 when their boat overturned on the St Lawrence River.

=======================

I belong to a a website that discusses the Mallorys in Canada......They were UEL (United Empire Loyalists...Tories if you will.)(They left Ct and first lived in VT where loyalties were divided. Some were members of the Green Mountain Boys fighting the British and other joined the Prince of Wales Regiment. One, Benajah Mallory, who had settled in Canada and was member of parliment, left to join his brother to fight against Canada in the War of 1812. He is considered at traitor in the Canada, though he and his brother had earlier fought in the Rev War. At one point he was offered command of the Army, but didn't think Congress would back the War and so declined.

Just doing a bit of research. I am Galen Mallory's great niece, sort of. His wife, Rose, was my great aunt. Rose passed away last year and Galen has just now passed. He had told us he had nine siblings, worked on a farm in Wisconsin as a child, and moved to California to join his brother Eldon in the barber shop. I am planning on making a little book in memory of Galen. Thank you for the research. My best, Jude

I was sorry to hear of Rose and Galen's passing. Galen was my father's (Marvin M.Mallory) older brother. From what I remember, Rose was quite an accomplished poet and one year sent my mother a booklet of her poems. My dad said when they were kids their mother, C.Imogene (She disliked her first name of Clyde), would bake pies and delibertly set a few of them on an open window sill and the boys would take them and eat them outside! He said they did all their farm work with horses and worked with them every day. When they cultivated corn the horse knew to not step on the corn plants. If at all possible I would enjoy reading your Memory book about Galen. Thank you.
