Towne, Mary E. (4 JAN 1861 - 27 Jul 1927)

(Prescott, Pierce County., Journal)

Mary Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Ephraim and Barbara Schaffer Scott, was born in Northumberland, Pa., Jan. 4, 1861, and died at Prescott, Wis., July 27th, 1927, aged 66 years, 6 months and 23 days. Her father died when she was a child, and she came west and lived with an aunt at Chippewa Falls, Wis., where she met and was married to Chas. H. Towne, Sept. 5, 1888.

They moved to the then territory of Washington, and later to Fairhaven, Wash., and came back to Wisconsin in 1893, and Mr. Towne entered the Methodist Ministry in Oct. 1894. She has lived as a minister's wife since that time, sharing the joys, the sorrows and the labors of the parsonage and the church with a willing mind and a ready hand, up to the time of her death.

She had not been well for a long time, but was up and around most of the time, but recently serious symptoms developed and it became apparent that the chances of her surviving were few indeed. All was done that medical skill and the best of care could accomplish, but suddenly the morning of July 27th her heart collapsed, and she quickly passed away, in due time to test the realities and enjoy the joys of the Father's House. She was of a deeply religious nature and delighted to bring up her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and all of them gladly followed the leadership of a Christian home. She delighted to work among the children on the charges where they were called to work, and was very successful in winning them to participate in the work in which she chose to engage. All her children survive her, and deeply feel her loss, but hopefully look forward to a blessed reunion when the Lord comes to be exalted in His saints. Her husband, her son, Charles S. Towne of Marshfield, Wis., her daughters, Mable E. Smith of Prescott, Rena Starkey of Lagrange, Ill., and Ruth M. Widmark of Moville, Iowa, one sister and three brothers in Pennsylvania, are left to mourn her loss, and her family will long remember her as a loving wife and mother, and a devout Christian.

Services were held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the M. E. Church, Prescott, Rev. George G. Valntyne, pastor of the Park Ave. M. E. Church, Minneapolis, Minn., officiating. Interment was at Pine Glen Cemetery, Prescott, Wis.
