West, Ellsworth (29 NOV 1877 - 25 OCT 1927)

Tuesday afternoon Ellsworth West of Christie, Clark County, Wis., while working with a crew repairing a barn on the Atkins farm north of Christie, a upper floor where he was working gave way and he fell with the wreckage, receiving injuries from which he died. A more complete obituary May be secured for next week's Press.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Lowe's Funeral Home.

Ellsworth West, whose fatal accident was briefly mentioned last week, came to his death while working alone in the basement of the barn on the Atkins farm near Christie. The barn had been raised and a basement wall built under it, the floor being held up by timbers supported by posts. Immediately over where Mr. West was working was a large bin of oats and it appear that the floor and its supports gave way, the boards and timbers from above pinning Mr. West down and the oats pouring in a flood over him until he was entirely covered. He had evidently been there for some time when the accident was discovered. Men from all directions gathered and even with all the help at hand it was some time before the body was freed from the wreckage. Life was extinct when he was gotten out.

Ellsworth West was born in Calumet, Co., Wis., Nov. 29, 1877. He came with his parents and the family to Christie more than 35 years ago and has lived in that locality ever since.

He was engaged in all kinds of ordinary work, but had considerable mechanical skill, and did carpenter and mason work and specializing in painting. For many years past he was employed in painting houses and barns all over this part of the country. He always had an interest in public affairs and for a long time past reported Christie new to the Neillsville Press. He was a good friend and neighbor and a kind husband and father, and will be greatly missed in the home and the community.

Mr. West was married to Miss Grace Morse of Christie, Nov. 4, 1904. Besides his wife he is survived by five daughters: Vivian, Mrs. Reuben Bartelt, Nina, Mrs. Glen Drew, both of Greenwood; Irene, age 12, Blanch 8 and Mildred 3, all at home. He leaves also his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace West of Elcho and seven brothers and two sisters: Nelson, Mark and Dewey of Elcho; Clyde in Washington; Dale at Edgerton, Earl at Williston, N.D., and Leon at Loyal; Martha, Mrs. Prickett of Elcho and Olivia, Mrs. Ernest Gumble of Ft. Atkinson.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at Lowe's Funeral Home, Rev. Householder of Greenwood officiating. Burial took place in Neillsville Cemetery.
