Holmes, Johanna (6 MAR 1848 - 4 JUN 1927)

Mrs. Albert Holmes passed away Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Van Natta, after a brief illness. Mrs. Holmes was at the home of a neighbor on Thursday when she was stricken with paralysis, but remained conscious until the following day when another stroke came. She lingered until the early hours of Saturday morning when she passed away peacefully and painlessly.

Mrs. Holmes, whose maiden name was Johanna Paulson, was born at Hodland, Norway, March 6, 1848. When a year old she came to America with her widowed mother and two brothers. She grew to womanhood in La Fayette and Iowa counties., Wisconsin, and was married to Albert Holmes April 13, 1873 at Avoca, Wis. About 13 years ago they came to Arpin, Wood Co., Wis. on a visit, and remained for a year, moving to Hudson where they bought a home. Mr. Holmes died soon after. Seven years ago Mrs. Holmes came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Van Natta, remaining in her home until her death. She was a woman of a fine type of mind and character and during her two years' residence here had won the respect of all whom she met.. She was a member of the Methodist Church for many years, affiliating with the local church here after coming to Neillsville.

To Mr. and Mrs. Homes were born 6 children: Paul of Elk Mound, Edith, Mrs. Imhoff of Hudson, Nellie, Mrs. Strauss of St. Paul, Elsie, Mrs. Reuter of Madison, Isaac of Stillwater, Minn.; and Margaret, Mrs. Van Natta of Neillsville. Mrs. Holmes leaves also 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. All of the children from away came immediately on hearing of her illness.

Brief services were held at the home Monday morning, Rev. Lambright officiating, the body was taken to Hudson for burial, accompanied by the relatives, funeral services being held in the chapel at Hudson Tuesday, burial taking place there beside her husband.
