Carter, James (6 JUL 1854 - 3 Dec 1926)

James Carter passed away at his home in this city (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) Friday morning, Dec. 3, 1926. He had been ailing for some time and had been under examination and treatment, but had secured no permanent relief. The Sunday previous to his death he was taken to Eau Claire, where a thorough examination by X-ray and other tests were given, which revealed that he had cancer of the stomach, other organs also being involved. It was apparent to his relatives that he could not live long, so he was brought back to Neillsville Wednesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Carter had been living on their farm south of Shortville, but had been getting ready to move to their home in Neillsville. During his absence at Eau Claire, this home was made ready to occupy and he was brought there on his return.

James Carter was born near Cambridge, Jefferson Co., Wis., July 6, 1854. He grew to manhood there, and in 1881 he went to North Dakota and took a claim near Grafton. In August 1882 he was married to Miss Fanny Irish at Grafton, N.D. They lived on their farm for a time, then moved to Wadena, Minn., and back to their farm again. About 36 years ago they sold out and moved to Clark County, buying the farm south of Neillsville. This has been their home most of the time since, although they have lived at times in their home in Neillsville.

Mr. Carter was a man of a high type of character, dealing justly and honestly, ever mindful of the good of all about him, industrious and faithful in all his undertakings, a kind and loving husband and father and helpful neighbor. Few men in this community have lived a life more blameless. He is survived by his wife and three daughters: Ethel, Mrs. Paul Kuhn; Clara, Mrs. Ed. F. Short; Ruth, Mrs. George Albaugh, all living near Shortville. One daughter, Ida, Mrs. Jesse Wilding, is deceased. He leaves also four grandchildren, a brother, David Carter of Fond du Lac and a half-brother, Ed Carter, of Neillsville.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, Rev. Rawson officiating.

Those from away in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harvey of Rochester, Minn., and David Carter of Fond du Lac.
