Holverson, Alexander H. (1851 - 31 Augl 1923)

Alexander H. Holverson, one of the oldest residents of the city (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.), died at his home Aug. 31, 1923, after a brief illness, at the age of 72. Alexander H. Holverson was born at Christiana, Norway, in 1851. He came to this country when seven years of age and lived at the home of his uncle in Beloit until he was about 16 years of age, when he came to Neillsville. He went to work in the lumber camps and having a ready ability to do any kind of work, he found various employments. He worked in a clothing store for Fred Klopf, drove stage, kept livery stable and developed into an excellent auctioneer. For years he was the leading auctioneer in this county and was known far and near; he also kept a harness shop and bought and sold all kinds of property. For many years he was employed by the lumber companies to hire men for the camps as they gathered into Neillsville. He spoke English, Norwegian and German readily, and had a speaking knowledge of several other languages, so that he could converse with nearly any foreigner who came looking for work. He served one term as under-sheriff, when J. W. Page was sheriff.

In late years he has not done much active business, but did some collecting, and other occasional business.

He was first married when a young man only 19 years of age to Miss Mary Miller. She died in July 1890. Several years later he was married to Mrs. Markey, who is also deceased. In August 1919 he was married to Mrs. Eva Potter, who survives him. He leaves two children of his first wife, Edward Holverson of Neillsville, and Carrie, Mrs. W. H. Woodworth of Eau Claire. He leaves also five grandchildren. All were here to attend the funeral, which was held at the home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Longenecker officiating.
