Dewhurst, Maria S. (19 April 1840 -19 Aug. 1922)

Mrs. Richard Dewhurst, one of the oldest residents of Neillsville, passed away at her home in this city, Aug. 19, after an illness of over two years. Maria S. Curtiss was born at La Porte, Ohio, April 19, 1840. When quite young she came with her parents to Cottage Grove, near Madison, where she grew to womanhood. In 1859 she was married to Richard Dewhurst at Madison and they came at once to Neillsville where Mr. Dewhurst had lived for a few years previously. They began life in small way, Mr. Dewhurst teaching school, and later being County Superintendent and County Judge, afterward becoming the main factor in establishing the Neillsville Bank. During all their early pioneer years Mrs. Dewhurst was a faithful helper of her husband in their home life. She was a woman of quiet manner devoted to her home and family, and possessed of a fine culture and a high sense of duty. In a modest way and unknown to the public generally, she was a contributor to many good causes and helpful to those in need.

Two years ago she had a stroke of paralysis, which left her an invalid.

Mr. Dewhurst died in 1895. Two children, a little son and daughter died many years ago.

Mrs. Dewhurst leaves on daughter, Mrs. W. L. Hemphill of this city, a granddaughter, Mrs. M. C. Rodolf of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. Scott officiating.
