Smith, Volney W. (8 Apr 1842 - 28 Sep 1922)

Volney W. Smith died at the home of his daughter at Madelia, Minn., on Thursday, Sept. 28th, 1922, after an illness that lasted several years.

He was born in Canada April 8th, 1842 and when about four years old came with his parents to Iron Ridge, Wis., where his father died shortly after. Later he moved with his mother to Concord, Jefferson Co.

On July 4th, 1870, he was married to Lodema Fuller. In the year 1873 they came to Clark County, Wis., locating on a farm one and one-half miles east of Loyal, Clark County. With the exception of four years pent in Tenn., Mr. Smith lived in this vicinity until 1910 when he moved west.

The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted in Co. B., 16th Wis. Infantry. He was in Sherman's March to the sea.

He is survived by four children, Mrs. Ada Thomas and Jesse Smith of Madelia, Minn., Bert Smith of Plevna, Mont., Mrs. Mabel Sweet, Beaver Dam, Wis., and one sister, Mrs. Annie Mingle of Loyal. His wife and three children preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith was a kind neighbor and a good citizen. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church on Monday at 10 a.m. The American Legion acted as pallbearers. Rev. J. H. Chatterson officiated.

He was laid to rest in the Pine Grove Cemetery.
